REVIEWS

Stacey Board, musician and columnist for The Muse's Muse
recently reviewed Fundamentals:

"If you invited over Joe Jackson, the Tragically Hip, and Mike Mills from REM, gave them some beer, and had them write some tunes, it would sound a lot like “Fundamentals”. It's much more intelligent, musically and lyrically, than your average pop record."

"If I understand the liner notes correctly, the music is written by committee, with David Brown and Thomas Vaughan divvying up the lyrics. It works here, with a general sound that’s cohesive, but a variation in approach and execution that gives the songs interestingly different personalities. I’m a sucker for a melodic bass line, and “Wondertwin” has it for me. “Will Not Fall” is a surprising little tune with a lot more depth and vulnerability than you’d get from strictly party boys. “Cigarettes, Whiskey and Wild Wild Women”, well, is pretty self explanatory."

"They also sound like they are having a lot of fun making this music....."

Indy reviewer The Rev gave fundamentals a covetous Three m's, where \m/ \m/ \m/= Linkin Park wishes they were this good:

"The Dr. Tom sound is a chameleon of styles and moods. They swing effortlessly from blues to dark pop to jangly indie rock and then they flirt with being a swing band. The lyrics seem to be about love and work and just being an average joe, which is good because sometimes the most profound thing you can express is the frustrations and joys that come from just living. Not everyone has to write lyrics like Lou Reed or Robert Smith and I think some songwriters forget that. Just say what you gotta say and play what you like. Dr. Tom knows that in spades and I think they could do better than playing for laughs and free beer. At first the vocals kinda put me off but Thomas' voice grew on me over the course of the CD. He's got soul and passion and that counts for a lot. He sorta sounds like Jim Morrison in his quieter moments or the guy from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. I like it."
